There are deep veins of … involved.

E.g. That newspapers are a casualty of the Information Age may qualify as irony, but there are deep veins of tragedy involved, especially for communities that used to have a lot more people paid, by the local paper, to pay attention to what was happening there.

  vein n.

常用搭配:in that vein ≈ in that way

  vain adj.

  cripple

to damage sb's body so that they are no longer able to walk or move normally

  – 2.~ sb/sth

to seriously damage or harm sb/sth.

  E.g. That ill-fated body(指WTO) was crippled by American isolationism(孤立主义).

(Source: The Economist 2018.07.21How to rescue the WTO)

Martin Luther King Jr., “Beyond Vietnam—A Time to Break Silence.” The speech was delivered at Riverside Church in New York City on April 4, 1967.

We were taking the black young men who had been crippled by our society and sending them eight thousand miles away to guarantee liberties in Southeast Asia which they had not found in southwest Georgia and East Harlem.

…is/are right to (be deeply worried/concerned), but not yet right to (despair 程度加深). For the outlines of a plan/solution to (tackle the problem) are discernible.

The Economist 2018.07.21How to rescue the WTO:

E.g. Free-traders are right to be deeply worried, but not yet right to despair. For the outlines of a plan to save the system are discernible.

There is no doubt thatreaders should (be deeply worried/concerned),but yet no need to(despair 程度加深). For the outlines ofa plan/solution to (tackle the problem)are discernible.

  – lay out

E.g. A June report from Pew lays out the damage.

  – deep pocket

E.g. But deep pockets don’t change basic economics.
